When it was built in the 1920s by the City of Deland, it was just a public airport. It later became a Naval Air Station. The first asphalt runway was put in around 1936. This field served the civilian community for five years. Not long after the U.S. Navy came in need of it in 1941. They know the call for service that drew thousands of young men into military service, so the City of Deland decided to provide its airport to the cause. The Navy bought more property near the area, and on November 17, 1942, opened the Deland Naval Air Station.
The Deland Naval Air Station was closed in March of 1946. They shut down the tower and all the field was turned over to the City of Deland. Some of the buildings there were occupied by the Florida Military School from 1956 to 1971.
The Deland Naval Air Station became a museum 50 years after the opening of the base. This base housed in the former Master of Arms Residence, which had been donated by the City of Deland. Following a widespread restoration effort, the building was dedicated in November, 1995. It has become home to a remarkable collection of historical artifacts, veterans’ mementos and military art that has grown progressively over the years. The Museum building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
