Most of the attractions at Lake Weir date to the early part of the 1900’s. There is the Ma Barker House where this famous female gangster and her notorious son were gunned down by the FBI in 1935 and which was visited by infamous gangster Al Capone. There is the Yacht Club which still features the original construction from over a century ago and which includes a banquet hall, open to the public for weddings and other events.
The lake is also a destination for aquatic activities such as swimming at several beaches, including Eaton Beach, Hamptons Beach, and Carney Island. There are a number of boat ramps, public picnic areas with grills, and even a place the rents pontoon boats for half a day up to a full week.
If you are visiting Lake Weir for the fun recreational activities, or events such as the annual Horses in the Sun (HITS) Triathlon, then you may choose to visit one of the local eateries. Two local favorites, Gator Joes & Eaton’s Beach Sandbar & Grill date back to 1925 and 1905, respectively. Gator Joes features a waterfront tiki bar atmosphere with bright colors and a tropical fee. Eaton’s Beach Sand Bar & Grill is a little more classy and is reopening this summer after being closed for major renovations.
Whatever reason you may have for visiting the lake, you are sure to find it a relaxing oasis in Central Florida. Trust us, it is worth the 20 mile drive from the Wildwood exit of Interstate 75.
