Microphlebectomy is the technique of removing varicose veins through tiny skin incisions in the legs. Since the incisions are tiny, there is good cosmetic appearance after removal of the varicose veins. This procedure is often done for patients whose bulging varicose veins persist after endovenous Laser treatment or radiofrequency ablation of the underlying vein with leaky valves. It is also done for patients whose varicose veins are too large for injection sclerotherapy yet not suitable for endovenous Laser treatment or radiofrequency ablation.
Microphlebectomy is done in the office under local anesthesia. The procedure is well tolerated by most patients. The varicose veins are grasped and removed with fine instruments through the tiny incisions. Following the procedure, the leg is wrapped with ace bandage for 2 days. Afterwards, a compression stocking is worn for 2 weeks. Most patients are able to return to work the day after the procedure.
